Pardon the graphic image, but when we typed in “Lion Drag” this is what popped up through our photography service, not the female impersonator queen-of-the-jungle we were hoping for.
But it does set the stage for the craziness that ensues each year at the Miss Leo Contest, happening this Saturday at the Hidden Door.
The Leo Party was founded in 1987 by three men born under the astrological sign of Leo. What started out as a simple comedy drag show to raise funds for AIDS charities, raising between $500 and $800, has grown into The Miss Leo Contest and now raises an average of $6500 during a single two-hour show.
But the party/contest still keeps true to its ragtag roots because there are no committees and there’s no advance planning. The show just happens every first Saturday in August at 8:00 p.m. And it always starts on time.
Proceeds benefit the AIDS Interfaith Network (AIN) and the night promises to be as unpredictable as it is hilarious.
The two best adjectives for any drag show, we think.
