Allow us to introduce you to a new music genre: Feminist country.
It’s a term we’d never heard until we received the music video for Antigone Rising’s first single, “That Was the Whiskey.” The description alone had us intrigued. But it was the video that confirmed this as a genre we could wholeheartedly embrace.
Of course, our first course of action before writing about them was to dust off our Greek Mythology for Dummies to remember who the heck Antigone was. As soon as we found the entry, memories of massaging our mother’s feet came flooding back. Antigone, of course, is the daughter that resulted from Oedipus’ incestuous relationship with his mama, Jocasta.
Pretty great inspiration for a band.
And Friday night, in support of their new back-to-back EPs, Whiskey & Wine – Volumes 1 & 2, you can catch Antigone Rising live at Sue Ellen’s.
Band co-founder Kristen Ellis-Henderson appeared on the cover of Time in April 2013 with her wife Sarah Kate Ellis-Henderson, president/CEO of GLAAD, for a feature on marriage equality.
As a result of that partnership, the band is donating 5% of their album earnings to GLAAD via pledgemusic.com.
Who knew it was possible to love this group even more.
