Superstar Extraordinaire

We just might be in love. Again. But with a girl. Played by a man.

Complicated like always, right?

Well, you’ll become equally infatuated as soon as you watch Cassie Glenn, totally rockin’ superstar extraordinaire (you’re welcome), the lead character of First Period. We somehow missed it during its original festival run, but it’s new to Netflix instant streaming.

Thank God. Because we’ve had a lot of rain in our neck of the woods, which has meant days upon days of binge-watching TV shows, underwear drawer organization and watching glorious lightning storms while getting pounded from behind.

First Period is an irreverent, low-budget comedy reminiscent of the delightful Girls Will Be Girls with a dash of Heathers and Mean Girls thrown in for good measure.

Set in the 1980s (like any good high school movie), it stars Brandon Alexander III as the high self-esteemed Cassie (above) and Dudley Beene as the homely loser Maggie. Together, they attempt to join the popular clique (led by two girls named Heather, natch) and though the plot follows a predictable path from start to finish, it’s OK.

The journey from opening sequence to end credits is simply there to provide opportunities for the two leads to unleash some instant-classic dialogue and set up some delicious parody. In one hilarious nod to The Breakfast Club involving lipstick and cleavage, we laughed so hard we nearly choked on our wine.

Which is why we should stop drinking straight from the bottle.
