Let us bind Satan this week.
Freaks. As if the world around us isn’t scary enough, Halloween is the one night of the year when adults encourage their children to disguise themselves as freaks and go door to door asking for handouts. Clearly a Democrat celebration. I find the entire affair rather pagan and unchristian. However, in the Spirit (so to speak) of the season, I pulled together my scariest ensemble in which to hand out candy to the children. All I had to find was a greasy blond wig and a stick of stale Cover Girl to answer the door dressed as Marjorie Taylor Greene. BOO!
Fiestas. The Mexicans will be in full array this week for their annual celebration of the dead. (Seems like an oxymoron, but I don’t know that word in Mexican!) Dia de los Muertos brings out the face paint, the skulls and the flowers to remember those passed on. I have to admire that it is a joyful celebration of remembrance rather than one of mourning. And celebrants remember funny events and anecdotes about the departed, thus making it a somewhat silly observance. I need to start celebrating this Mexican fiesta. Lord knows there are some dead people I’d like to still make fun of! Lord, forgive me.
Friends. It is surely a heartbreak when someone dies. Yet so much more when death occurs in the prime of life. People worldwide are mourning the loss of Brother Matthew Perry this past weekend. Because he was an integral part of one of the most beloved television sitcoms of our time, his face and name are truly global. Let me join in the remembrances by sharing these thoughts. Satan himself tried very hard to bring Brother Matthew down through the scourge of drugs and alcohol. Yet Matthew rose out of the pits of hell to a life of sobriety and purpose. No matter the final cause, I rebuke the Devil in the face of this untimely death. I choose to remember the smiles Brother Perry brought to many, the laughter he inspired, and the Friends he made with all of us. May the Lord say to him for eternity, “I’ll Be There For You.” Amen.
