Quality Over Quantity.
That has become our mantra as we get older, whether it refers to cocktails, dining out or sexual encounters with strangers.
Back in the day, however, we were ruled by quantity over everything, especially when it came to alcoholic beverage consumption.
Because of our shift toward making better decisions (still not good decisions, but better ones), we hadn’t even noticed the return of Cruising the Crossroads to the Caven Enterprises bars in the neighborhood.
When we first discovered Cruising the Crossroads (and if memory serves, it was Cruisin’ back then), drinks were 50¢ each and we could order two at a time. We’d often get in line, order two drinks, then get back in line to order to more before moving onto the next spot. Then repeat that cycle at every bar.
Today, prices have gone up a bit, with $2.75 well drinks and $4 domestic beers. But it’s still quite the bargain in a world where drink prices have skyrocketed, even at gay bars, where it used to be standard to have cheap drinks.
The best part of Cruising the Crossroads, then and now, is the chance to get into Sue Ellen’s or Station 4 without paying cover, a huge benefit if you plan to stay at one or the other for the rest of the night.
To take full advantage of this bar crawl every Friday and Saturday, start at Cheat Code Lounge from 8:00-8:30 p.m., followed by Sue Ellen’s from 8:30-9:00 p.m., JR’s Bar & Grill, from 9:00-9:30 p.m., TMC from 9:30-10:00 p.m. and end at Station 4 between 10:00-10:30 p.m.
You might see us there for a bit of nostalgia, but we’ll be the idiots in the corner drinking $15 top-shelf.
