SPCA Pet of the Week: Brazil Is Ready to Learn What Safe Feels Like

Brazil has one of those faces that makes you want to lower your voice, sit down beside her and let her decide when she is ready. Then that little tongue-out grin appears, and suddenly the serious girl is gone.

This 5-year-old Mastiff mix weighs 60 pounds and has a gentle, affectionate nature underneath some understandable shyness. She can take a little time to warm up to new people, but patience pays off. As she starts to feel safe, the softer, sweeter Brazil begins to show herself.

Right now, Brazil needs a calm foster home while she receives heartworm treatment and waits for a dental procedure. Her activity will be restricted during treatment, so this is not the season for long hikes or ambitious adventures. Think quiet couch time, short leash walks and a household willing to let her settle in at her own pace.

The SPCA of Texas provides foster families with food, toys, bowls, beds and other supplies at no cost. Her foster will need to bring her back to the SPCA periodically for veterinary appointments, but the day-to-day assignment is wonderfully simple: give Brazil a peaceful place to heal and remind her that people can be kind.

Brazil is also one of the SPCA of Texas’ Longtime Lovables, pets who have spent more than 60 days at the shelter. Her adoption fee is free.

For the right person, Brazil could be a very good reason to slow life down a little. Give her time, let her trust come naturally and you may end up with 60 pounds of loyal, tongue-out sweetness beside you.

Meet Brazil at the SPCA of Texas Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center, 2400 Lone Star Drive in Dallas, any day of the week from noon to 6 p.m.
