We’re Whores For Jorge’s

Or perhaps we should say we’re “sluts for Jorge’s” since we don’t get paid to eat there (though that would definitely be a great gig).

Long established as our go-to pre-show restaurant in the Arts District, Jorge’s Tex-Mex does Mexican food like we like it – the West Texas way. Having spent a good chunk of our lives living in that region of the state, it’s great to have a place that brings back fond memories of the portion of our childhood and adolescence spent with a plate of enchiladas in our face.

We go to Jorge’s so often that the bartenders all know us by name. (Oh wait, that’s the same treatment we get every place in the city that serves booze, so maybe we’re just drunks, not VIPs.) But upon the launch of a lighter menu a couple weeks ago, we got to experience the restaurant like a virgin. Consider our Poblano popped!

Highlights of the new warm-weather menu include salmon ceviche, salmon tacos, ribeye tacos and a delightfully spicy brisket enchilada. (OK, so those last two aren’t necessarily lighter and healthier, but they’re new and we would love to see them find a permanent place on the menu.) Grilled chicken lettuce wraps are also a new option, but they failed to excite us.

Of course, the new cocktails made us dance a jig. Several local restaurants do a spicy margarita, but La Otra Rita (“the Other,” shown above) is easily our favorite. A refreshing citrus flavor dominates with a nice kick-in-the-ass peppery finish.

One thing about Jorge’s that’s consistent through their entire menu, old and new items alike, is that everything is made fresh without any shortcuts. Because if you’re ordering a Mexican plate at any other restaurant and it shows up in 3 minutes, something is terribly, horribly, seriously wrong.

Just like Rick Perry running for President.
