We’ve been dying to see Hair ever since it won the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival in 2009. In our eagerness to catch it live, we mistakenly purchased tickets from scalpers for what we thought was the 1960s-based extravaganza.
Pubes! The Musical was too short.
Monique: Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Leg Hair was way too long (and just a little gross).
But the real deal, Hair, is just right. And now it’s in Dallas for a good, two-week run.
Filled with plenty of man love, songs about sodomy and full-frontal nudity, we knew we were onto something great when several of the olds around us left over the show’s “controversy.” What a bunch of squares. Of course, most of them looked like they were senior citizens back in the ’60s anyway, so who can blame them for their uptight, close-mindedness, and need to get home because the show started after their bedtime.
Besides, it gave us a much better view of the hot guys during the second act, not having to dodge around all that blue hair in front of us.
One of the greatest parts of this production is the cast’s interaction with the audience. If you’re sitting in orchestra seats, prepare to be incorporated into the show. And make sure, no matter what, to try to get on stage for the curtain call where everyone is invited to the hippie dance party. How many times in your life will you get a chance to perform onstage at the Winspear?
So get your groovy on (and maybe some beads and a fringe jacket), then travel back in time to an era when love was not just in the air, but also in the hair.
