Gal Pal: Kellie Rasberry

Yesterday, we told you about the Kellie Rasberry Celebrity Teddy Bear Hunt, but we wanted to know more about the woman whose name is attached to the event, so we met Kellie for lunch and asked the hilarious, sweet, gorgeous radio personality about her BGF (Big Gay Following), one of her least favorite terms in the world, and the celebrities she’s tired of talking about on the radio. And as a person who hears many of the future hits before anyone, we get a little glimpse into her personal playlist.

Gay List Daily: So, everybody knows you as being sassy, opinionated and funny. You’re like a gay man with a vagina.
Kellie Rasberry:
Ha! I think gay men are much more cutting than I am! I think gay men appreciate a funny woman and they appreciate a louder woman and a bigger woman. And I think part of everything I just mentioned intimidates a straight man, you know? I hate to say that, but I think it’s true. I walk into a room in my four-inch heels, but that puts me at six-foot-two and that’s a little intimidating, but gay men love it.

I go with my mom and buy these ridiculously expensive shoes that are so high and sexy and she asks me where I’m going to wear them and I say, “To gay things!” Because gay men are the only men I have in my life. Everything that turns straight men off about me, gay men like. I’ve gotta figure out how to balance the two.

GLD: That’s the eternal quandary for women who hang out with gay men.
KR
: Then you get labeled a “fag hag” and I hate that term! I’d rather be called a gay bitch, just not a hag!

GLD: Well, there are worse groups of people to have as fans.
KR
: Right? And straight events are so boring and intimidating, especially if you’re trying to meet a man. Then it’s awkward. With gay people, they’re not interested in me so we can just have fun.

GLD: Have you ever hit on a gay guy that you thought was straight?
KR
: I’ve never had an instance where I thought a gay man was straight, but I’ve had plenty where I thought man was straight and he was gay.

GLD: A-List: Dallas?
KR
: To get committed to another reality show is too overwhelming. It’s hard enough to keep up with all the Housewives. I liked [A-List] OK, I just thought it was so staged. Probably these people, most of them, didn’t know each other until two days before they filmed and now they’re in these huge fights. I think reality TV works better if you don’t know anybody involved. I know some of the people involved and it kind of takes the fun out of it for me. Why are you wearing a hat everywhere you go? I’ve run into you 50 times and you’ve never worn a cowboy hat in your life, now suddenly you’re a rootin’ tootin’ gay cowboy. Alllllllright—but I love you!

GLD: You work for a radio show and hear a lot of new music. Who do you love and who not so much?
KR
: I listen to talk radio a lot and I’m not even sometimes listening to what they’re saying. I just like the sound of voices in the car. But I like boy bands, I can’t help it. I like pop. I think it’s fun and silly.

But right now I like Hot Chelle Ray, “Tonight Tonight because it makes me happy. I like Rihanna, (singing) Here’s to the freakin’ weekend. I like dirty songs for some reason. I also love that new David Guetta/Usher song, “Without You.”

But, like, Adele gets on my nerves. I’ve got enough sad stuff in my life without listening to her. Such a downer. I’m not saying she’s not talented, I’d just like her to do something more upbeat.

GLD: Who’s driving you crazy right now in the world of celebrities?
KR
: That’s hard. I get mad in the moment [when reporting on celebrity news], but I don’t hold on to it. I think Justin Bieber’s trying to hard to be a black kid. He looks so ridiculous. I look at Selena Gomez and I ask, “if he wasn’t a billionaire kid would you date a guy who dresses like that?”

I don’t keep up with the Kardashians. That whole gimmick thing. The mom suddenly has a bladder control issue and that’s the whole focus of the show and now she’s suddenly the spokesperson for pee pads for adults? And now she’s whoring out her 14 and 15 year old kids. It’s embarrassing. I don’t appreciate the Kardashians. I think they’re disrespectful to their mother, the language they use, but all the kids want to be like them. Famous and rich. That’s what every kid wants to be right now.

GLD: Who else?
KR
: I think Rihanna has gone a little bit far with the vulgar. I understand you’re not a role model, but have some pride in yourself. It’s about being a decent human being.

GLD: Who do you love?
KR
: I love Britney, she’s my heart. I love her like a mother loves a baby. I want her to be ok. But you never want to meet your favorite celebrity. It’s always a disappointment, so I never want to meet Britney. It won’t be what I want it to be.

All we can say is meeting Kellie Rasberry wasn’t the least bit disappointing and we hope her event this Sunday is a huge success.
