All Thai'd Up

For the past couple of years now, we’ve heard people singing the praises of Thai Massage. They talk about how you’re fully clothed, placed on the floor and stretched like a piece of spaghetti around a meatball.

That’s three strikes in our book. How could that possibly be relaxing?

But when offered by Hiatus Spa, home to some of our all-time favorite massage experiences, we decided to give their version of Thai Massage a chance.

Especially with Andrew, our therapist of choice. He could rub our body with oil, light an aromatherapy candle, and set us on fire to the soothing sounds of Enya and we’d think it was simply divine. So we put our complete trust into his capable hands. And feet. And knees. (This is a full-body effort for him, too.)

First of all, being clothed isn’t bad at all. Bring your own loose-fitting T-shirt, and they provide special drawstring pants. Trust us, in the positions they put you in, you don’t want to be naked. Things would be flipping and flopping all over the place. (That’s an entirely different kind of Thai massage over on Harry Hines.)

At Hiatus they do the entire treatment on a regular massage table, making it far more comfy than the floor. But you still get one heck of a stretching workout once Andrew hops on the table with you and straddles your increasingly limber body.

(Is it getting hot in here?)

What we thought was going to be a grueling exercise in pain turned out to be one of the most therapeutic and relaxing massages we’d ever had.

We felt its benefits for an entire week, just like a visit to the chiropractor. Without that annoying sculpture of the human spine on the desk.
