Yesterday, one of the most buzzed-about restaurants in town opened what we wish were squeaky screen doors to an eager, hungry public. Introducing the first Southern comfort-food eatery in Dallas that’s guaranteed to get a huge chunk of the gay market for its name alone: Sissy’s.
(Which is also what all our elementary school friends called our house as they rode by on their bikes and pointed.)
Though why dwell on the past. There’s something at former Food Network reality star Lisa Garza’s new restaurant that could not only solve world hunger, but also bring peace to the Middle East.
Or should we say, pieces to the Middle East.
It’s her signature Sissy’s Fried Chicken, easily the best dang battered bird we’ve ever eaten. House spiced, buttermilk soaked and pressure fried, every single bite is tender, juicy and not the slightest bit greasy. Somewhere in the great beyond, there’s a certain Colonel plotting how he’s going to haunt Garza for screwing with his legacy.
Elsewhere on the menu are many other deep-south delights. Squash puppies, Grandma’s layered salad, cast-iron Texas quail, fried okra and squash casserole are each savory standouts.
And to end things, you can’t do better than buttermilk pecan pie or Better Than Sex chocolate cake. Sadly, the only thing we didn’t get to try was Sissy’s Bourbon Balls.
But that’s ok. We’ve had many a sissy’s balls, though vodka’s usually to blame instead of bourbon.
