Dancing Queens

You don’t have to sit so close to the stage that you’re in the Patti LuPone spittle splash zone to have an enjoyable, authentic Broadway experience. Just be warned that instead you may be groped by Paul J. Williams.

It’s all part of the hilarious variety show from Uptown Players: Broadway Our Way. Performing more than 30 numbers from every genre and decade of Broadway hits, the 28-member ensemble cast gets a chance to cut loose during this annual fundraiser for the theater.

The evening features the always-talented singers, actors and dancers performing their little hearts out. Williams keeps things moving with his hilarious one-liners and audience interaction between songs, this year sharing the hosting spotlight with Marisa Diotalevi.

Highlights of this year’s show include an opening number extravaganza, “Freak Flag” from Shrek The Musical, “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” from Fiddler on the Roof and the mating anthem of many a heterosexual male, “The Trolley Song” from Meet Me in St. Louis, all under the direction of super-talented B.J. Cleveland and choreographed by the dreamy John de los Santos.

Other musicals getting the Uptown treatment are West Side Story, The Most Happy Fella, Xanadu and Dreamgirls.

Seeing each of these performances in their complete Broadway productions would normally cost you close to $3,000. But for the low, low price of 40 bucks you’ll have plenty of cash left over to donate to Uptown Players.

Or be a big shot at the theater bar.
