Nick’s Knacks

This past Saturday, we went on our usual weekend troll hunt. You know, the scary little men who live under bridges (and don’t ask questions when you need a little lovin’).

Now that the new Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge is finally open to traffic, we thought it would be fun to drive across to the West Dallas side and search for a more high-class troll under the super-fancy bridge.

What we found was even more magical.

It’s called The Workroom, and it’s one of the most charming shops we’ve set foot into in months.

Yet the recently opened business doesn’t lend itself to one simple description. It’s part floral design studio, part art gallery, part home decor shop and part antique mart.

We like to think of it as Dallas’ first Floragalledecortiqueporium. And Sidewalk Café. (They serve coffee and cold drinks, too.)

The creation of one visionary gay artist and designer named Nick Troilo and his partner, Jim Wright, The Workroom is just another example of somebody taking a building that’s mostly in disrepair and turning it into something hip and fabulous. (But don’t knock that sparsely decorated little taqueria just across the street. It’s delicious if you have a sense for adventure and a decent grasp of the Spanish language.)

But why we really love The Workroom is the ability to pick up just about anything and it would be perfect as a really cool gift for someone who has everything.

Everything except an antique ceramic kitty-cat flowerpot with a cactus growing out of it, that is.
