If the winds are blowing 120mph and you’re being pelted in the face with flying pieces of fish and wasabi, take cover immediately. You’re in the middle of a Toronado.
Otherwise, one should never fear the presence of sushi in the sky (with daikon). Especially when it’s at Reunion Tower and its first-class restaurant, Five Sixty by Wolfgang Puck.
There, high above the city, Master Sushi Chef Hiroyuki “Fuji” Fujino is the man behind the curtain, carefully controlling every tasty morsel from the sea.
And the only way to taste Fuji’s brilliance is with his Omakase menu, available exclusively at the intimate six-seat sushi bar. Unlike other spots in the restaurant, here you sit still while the rest of the people revolve around you. It’s a narcissist’s dream!
Yet what really makes Omakase special is that it’s a completely customized sushi experience. Once you’re seated, Fuji or one of his assistants interviews you about your level of culinary adventure.
You tell him your seafood likes (Crab! Lobster! Shrimp!). And dislikes (Nori! Miso! Charbroiled mermaid!) You can even request vegetarian or non-seafood options like succulent duck breast.
But the best way to truly experience an Omakasegasm is to let Fuji take control. Then prepare for the wonderful wizard to amaze with one edible masterpiece after another.
On our visit, we were dazzled with the likes of king crab sunomono (cucumber salad); a marinated daikon roll of hamachi, shrimp, shiso leaf, cucumber, avocado, yamagobo and sushi rice; and a sashimi sampler of big-eye tuna, white salmon, and hotate scallops (pictured above).
The $75 price tag gets you between seven and eight courses, which for the quality of the sushi ingredients, is a huge bargain.
Or what we like to call a raw deal.
