Mean Green Is The New Black

Waiting until the summer for Season 3 of Orange Is the New Black is cruel and unusual punishment.

But we can get a slight reprieve from our binge-watching withdrawals next month when transgender advocate and actress Laverne Cox (Sophia) appears at the University of North Texas to speak about her experiences as a minority transgender woman.

As part of the Mary Jo and V. Lane Rawlins Fine Arts Series, she’ll discuss how race, class and gender impact the lives of trans women of color. She’ll divulge tidbits about being raised in Alabama by a single mother in a Christian household, as well as life in New York City where she attended college to pursue her acting career.

Cox is a dynamic presence and she’s giving a face and voice to a segment of the population that has few high-profile role models.

The talk is free to UNT students and $10 tickets for the general public just went on sale yesterday.

You are hereby sentenced to make a road trip to Denton.

Conjugal visits optional.
