It’s always good to have a home team to root for. Supposedly that’s why people like the Super Bowl or something.
But we’re about to join Team Kennedy when the seventh season of RuPaul’s Drag Race premieres on March 2. That’s right, our city’s own Kennedy Davenport will be competing. And if you’re up for a road trip and can’t wait for March, you can catch her and the season seven girls at a special advance screening at the Buzios Room in Austin on February 27.
To get in the mood, we chatted up Kennedy for a little scoop.
He Said Magazine: Howdy, Kennedy! So happy to see a Dallas girl on RuPaul’s Drag Race. What’s the dynamic like of working with other queens on the show vs. at a club in Dallas?
Kennedy Davenport: No matter where you work there’s one thing we all have in common, we have a job to do and that’s where my mind is. The dynamic is much more tense on Drag Race because we are in a competition and the stress of that alone made the environment tense. Whereas, working in Dallas the girls are more laid back and easygoing and there is more of opportunity to really have fun and enjoy the night with your peers.
HSM: What are your favorite places to hang out in Dallas and why?
KD: Well everybody knows Miss Kennedy love to eat, honey! If I’m not in the kitchen, I love me a good restaurant. I love my American cuisines such as Cheddars, The Black Eyed Pea, Applebees. I love the Olive Garden. I also love my home cooking places like The South Dallas Cafe, and Elaine Caribbean restaurant (good oxtails) I also love a good steak house. Yes, I know I’m a big girl at heart I can’t help it.
HSM: What about bars?
KD: My hangout places would have to be my home bar, The Brick and Joe’s in Dallas on Wycliff. On my off days I may swing by the “boy bar” BJ’s (www.bjsnxs.com)in Dallas to watch the hot men do their thing. If I want to see a good show, I go to S4 on Cedar Springs in Dallas with my mother Kelexis Davenport and watch the show in the world famous Rose Room. If I want to go out and enjoy a night of good music and sexy Latin men I’ll swing by the Havana Lounge. I love to bowl, roller skate – anything fun and recreational. But most of all I love family time with my biological and my gay families. It’s all the same to me. Family is EVERYTHING to me.

HSM: Is there any part of the Drag Race experience that was not what you expected?
KD: Honestly, I went into Drag Race with no expectations. You get into this full speed ahead then overdrive mode. I live my life with no expectations, that way you receive no disappointments or let downs. You just have to stay focused on the task at hand regardless of what they throw at you.
HSM: What can fans expect at the “Meet the Queens” show in Austin?
KD: They can expect a beautiful smile. A nice person eager to meet and greet them. But most of all, they can expect a sickening show from the ten dancing toes of Kennedy Davenport.
HSM: How do you deal with hecklers?
KD: (laughing) I’m pretty quick on my feet. Don’t let the sweet southern belle charm fool you. Proceed with caution, sweetness. Even in fun I will read you. If you dish, be ready to take it. IJS (Im just saying).
