We’re shaking up our usual Fall routine.
Normally, we use the cooler weather and body-hiding sweaters and jackets as an excuse to pack on a few pounds. It starts at the State Fair of Texas and continues through that last piece of leftover gingerbread washed down with champagne at 12:01 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
This year, we’re going to pace ourselves. Mix in a few greens. Think ahead to next summer so it’s not such a bitch to shed pounds an avoid that dreaded over-the-Speedo muffin top.
Our new secret weapon in this pre-emptive strike is Unleavened Fresh Kitchen, which opened this week in the Lakewood Shopping Center near the Lakewood Theater.
We went opening day and the food was incredibly fresh, filling and, well, fabulous. We were genuinely stuffed after half a loaded bacon-and-egg wrap, but pressed on to eat the whole thing. (We’re not quitters.)
That’s because they pack every dish on the mostly gluten-free menu with natural, whole foods that appear in every wrap, hash and salad.
At breakfast, you can get anything made into a wrap or served atop potato hash. At lunch, you have a similar decision, but instead of hash your option is to throw everything atop a salad.
We love mixing things up every visit. Besides. Choosing salads means more calories to devote to mimosas.
Which are also gluten-free, as luck would have it.
