When we were growing up, Easter always scared us. Like, way more than anything at Halloween.
There were always frightening Bible movies on TV filled with terrible things from child killings to people turning into pillars of salt to gory crucifixions. Rikki Tikki Tavi also aired this time of year and the snake-filled cartoon kept us awake at night. The constant tales at home and church of Jesus rising from the dead meant our parents believed in ghosts, which of course meant they were real.
Come Sunday morning, at least, there were Easter baskets filled with chocolate, Peeps and tiny toys. It was the only cheerful thing we had to look forward to.
Our fondness of Easter baskets continues to this day, especially at the annual auction at The Round-Up where baskets come filled with all sorts of fabulous adult-pleasing goodies with proceeds benefiting Resource Center and Texas Gay Rodeo Association. Preview the baskets in the Parlor on Saturday night prior to the auction so you know which ones you need to prepare to fight for.
Best of all, you can earn money to use in the auction by participating in the Easter Bonnet Contest a half-hour prior. Cash prizes will be awarded to the best individual and best group.
Beautiful bonnets are just one more thing to take the terror out of the holiday.
Unlike deviled eggs.
