Oh, the dramedy!
Leave it to playwright Terrence McNally to find humor and humanity in the most unlikely of places: the relationship between a gay man and his dead partner’s mother.
That’s the central conflict at the heart of Mothers and Sons, an Uptown Players regional premiere debuting Friday at the Kalita Humphreys Theater.
The visit from this mother-in-law is completely unexpected and the fact that her son’s partner has now moved on, married another man and had a son is a bit of a shock. (To say the least.) Yet what happens next is what makes this 2014 Tony Award-nominated play such an emotional triumph.
You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. And you might just want to buy your own mother-in-law flowers.
Whether or not they’re laced with anthrax is entirely up to you.
