Warm Summer Sum

dal-08_29_16At the core of any great piece of theater is a complicated relationship.

Or several.

In David Stevens’ The Sum of Us, there’s enough Bravo TV-worthy drama to spare.

An aging widower, Harry, already has a rocky relationship with his gay son, Jeff, but when Jeff brings home hot gardener Greg to meet Dear Ol’ Dad, the entire romance is put in jeopardy. Meanwhile, Harry is exploring some hot love of his own with a woman he met online.

Directed by Mark C. Guerra and starring Randy Pearlman as Harry, Blake Lee as Jeff, Michael Brannian as Greg and Lindsay Hayward as Joyce, The Sum of Us is one of our all-time favorite LGBT works.

Of course, we’re especially fond of the movie version with a handsome young Russell Crowe, so make sure to add that to your watchlist for an after-theater followup.

Regardless of medium, we adore The Sum of Us because it many complex emotions and situations that are as relevant today as they were when the play was first published in 1990. Plus, it has real heart. And a welcome sense of humor.

Set in the intimate Theater Too space, it’ll be like you’re right there in the dysfunctional family yourself.

Consider it training for Thanksgiving.
