At no point in recorded history have transgender people been more visible.
But most still face disproportionate amounts of discrimination, intolerance and violence.
The more we hear directly from these people, however, the more we can all empathizes with what it’s like to live in their skin. The word brave gets thrown around often when anyone goes public with something that isn’t “the norm,” but for anyone who’s ever come out as different, it’s the only word that even comes close to describing the experience.
Tonight, HBO Documentaries presents The Trans List, the latest film from portrait photographer and filmmaker Timothy Greenfield-Sanders who brought us intimate looks at other marginalized people in The Black List, The Women’s List, The Latino List and The Out List, among others.
The powerful film features interviews with outspoken trans celebrities and lesser known activists among a roster of 11 people, including Laverne Cox, Caitlyn Jenner and Amos Mac (pictured above, left to right). Their stories are dramatic. Tragic. Maddening. But each person interviewed has managed to triumph in small and big ways alike.
Plus, should you find yourself in Los Angeles between now and February, The Annenberg Space for Photography has a special exhibition entitled IDENTITY: Timothy Greenfield-Sanders The List Portraits, which includes breathtaking photos of the subjects from all his List documentaries.
In a time when being different seems more dangerous than ever, we need to all rally around everyone who doesn’t fit the Trump World Order.
The first step is listening.
Then comes understanding.
