Travel Tuesday: Parties, Parades & Performances In P-Town Paradise

Seeking summer sun, surf and sand? Look beyond the Caribbean and Mexico for one of our favorite gay vacation spots.

It’s a little-known place called Provincetown that we think has the potential be huge among the gays someday.

Of course, we’re kidding around, because P-Town has for decades been a queer mecca for good reason. And as the brisk temperatures and snow of winter melt into spring, the Massachusetts mainstay gives us—and the entire LGBTQ community—plenty to look forward to.

Now’s a good time to book for the summer before accommodations completely sell out, especially if you want to snag a decent vacation rental. But we enjoy staying at hotels when we visit and P-Town has numerous options, all depending on the vibe you’re looking for.

If you’re in your Slut Era, we recommend staying in the heart of town at the gay resort, The Boatslip. It’s nothing fancy, but the resort’s a whole lot of fun as the hub of summertime T-dances and other gatherings for gaggles of gays.

For a more chill time, the sleek AWOL, a chic little inn near the moors. The beautiful property also attracts plenty of gay men, but offers a little serenity if you want some peace and quiet that’s not too far from the action when you seek a healthy dose of fun and fabulousness in town.

Summer in P-Town is your big chance to load up on queer entertainment, too, with the top drag performers and other big-name acts taking over small stages across the town. Ticket prices are shockingly low compared to tour stops in the rest of the U.S., so that can more than offset your overall travel expenses.

Once you book your flight into Boston, it’s a good idea to get your fast ferry ticket to Provincetown with Bay State Cruise Company, too. That 90-minute voyage allows you to meet a few fellow travelers and get the party started before you ever step foot on P-Town soil.

Whether you’ve never been to Provincetown or you’ve been every year for the past 33 summers, it’s prime time to plan a visit.
