Kings, Queens & Everything-in-Betweens For A Day

Our high school prom was surprisingly OK. Nothing too traumatic, nothing worthy of a John Hughes retelling. Simply middle-of-the-road high-school mediocrity.

So whenever we see a movie, TV show, or in this case, Broadway musical, about the big right-of-passage dance party, we tend to relive our youth vicariously. Especially because it’s always a more exciting version unfolding before us with way hotter people and far better choreography.

We first saw The Prom as a made-for-Netflix movie musical during the height of Covid lockdowns and it was just what the Dr. Fauci ordered: Light-hearted, feel-good, get-up-and-boogie silly fun.

Tomorrow night, however, we’re even more excited because Uptown Players brings their version of the queer-centric musical to the stage with performances through July 28.

Directed by Penny Ayn Maas, with music direction by Vonda K. Bowling and choreography by Evor Wright, the production stars Audrey Beyersdorfer, Erin Bowman, Henry Cawood, B.J. Cleveland, Sophie DeYoung, Presley Duyck, Stephanie Felton, Julia Rose Hartman, Sam Illum, Justin Konopka, Nick Leos, David Lugo, Joshua McLemore, Maya Michalski, Johanna Nchekwube, Reyna Sanchez, Cara Statham Serber, Carlos Strudwick, Sammy Swim, Trey Tolleson, Jason Robert Villarreal, Kelsey Jordan Ward and Gabriela Yarbrough.

Sadly, you’ll only be allowed to “dance” along in the comfort of your seat.

But in the aisles during intermission? All bets are off.
