From Temple to the Aisle: A Nice Indian Boy Is the Gay Rom-Com We Deserve

If you’ve been craving a rom-com that serves heart, humor and a dash of family drama (with a side of samosas), A Nice Indian Boy is about to become your new favorite flick. Dropping into theaters on April 4th, this film brings all the feels—and a few awkward family dinners—to the big screen.

Naveen Gavaskar (played by Deadpool’s Karan Soni) is the kind of guy who keeps things quiet—literally. He’s a soft-spoken doctor with a family that says they’re cool with his sexuality… but have never had to prove it. Enter Jay Kurundkar (Jonathan Groff, aka Frozen’s Kristoff and your Broadway crush from Hamilton), a white guy raised by Indian parents who’s confident, charming and impossible to hide from your family for long.

Their meet-cute happens in a temple (because where else do modern gay love stories begin?), and their relationship quickly blossoms. But when Naveen introduces Jay as just a “friend” in front of his brother-in-law, things spiral. Secrets unravel, family tensions boil over, and Naveen finds himself stuck between the life he wants and the expectations of his loud, loving and very opinionated family. Cue the emotional rollercoaster: misunderstandings, heartfelt fights and a sweet reconciliation that leads to—what else?—a big, fabulous Indian wedding.

Directed by Roshan Sethi and based on Madhuri Shekar’s play, this film brings together a star-studded cast, including Sunita Mani (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Harish Patel (Eternals) and the hilarious Zarna Garg. It’s a fresh take on love, culture and identity, with just enough comedy to keep things light and enough heart to make you text your mom after.

Whether you’re here for the romance, the representation or just to see Jonathan Groff in a kurta, A Nice Indian Boy is a must-watch.
