What happens when the queens of queer theater link arms with the titans of contemporary dance? You get IMAGINE, a jaw-dropping, heart-thumping, toe-tapping collaboration between Uptown Players and Bruce Wood Dance that’s set to take over the Kalita Humphreys Theater for just one dazzling weekend. This limited-run, cabaret-style dance concert is the kind of artistic magic that makes you want to snap your fingers, toss some glitter and shout “Yaaas!”
Set to a soundtrack that reads like your fabulous uncle’s record collection — John Lennon, Elton John, Johnny Mathis — it’s an emotional rollercoaster wrapped in sequins and served with a side of truth. IMAGINE celebrates identity, love and the beautiful mess of self-discovery through live vocals and contemporary dance that hits you right in the feels. And trust: these aren’t your average triple-threats. Uptown faves Peter DiCesare, Seth Paden, Kylie Stewart and Brett Warner are sharing the stage with Bruce Wood Dance standouts Mia Rosin, Weaver Rhodes, Elliott Trahan, Cole Vernon and Megan Storey, who’ll be making their Kalita debut. That’s a stage bursting with talent.
Directed by Clayton Younkin, with choreography by Rhodes, Trahan and Vernon, plus music direction by Adam C. Wright, this show is a true fusion of voices, bodies and big feelings. And with only two performances—Saturday, August 9 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, August 10 at 2 p.m.—this is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in Dallas’ performing arts calendar. Tickets are $25 to $75, and demand is already hotter than a Fourth of July patio party in Oak Lawn. So secure those seats now.
Because when it comes to celebrating queer brilliance on stage, IMAGINE is the show we didn’t know we needed—but absolutely deserve.
