Where To Eat This Weekend: Elephant Indian Grill

What you’d expect (and what you’ll see) at a low-rent motel along North Central Expressway: Guys on Sniffies poking their heads from behind bushes and looking for propped-open doors.

What you would least expect (and what you’ll see) at a low-rent motel along North Central Expressway: One of the best Indian restaurants in all of Dallas-Fort Worth.

We’ve never been to India, so we can’t really compare anything local to true Indian cuisine, but we’ve had some phenomenal food from the continent in New York, London, and, surprisingly, New Orleans.

Dallas Indian, on the other hand, has rarely impressed us.

That was before Elephant Indian Grill quietly opened in a former BuzzBrews diner location connected to a sketchy-even-for-a-Quality-Inn Quality Inn.

We drove past it for weeks and kept saying to ourselves that we needed to try it, but when another food-loving friend raved about it, we quickly remedied our absence.

Now, since May, we’ve been at least six times. It’s nothing fancy, but as many restaurants as we go to for our job (and pleasure), it takes a truly great eatery to land a spot in our permanent dining rotation.

So far, in all our visits, we’ve only ordered new dishes because there are so many options. And so many beyond the usual chicken tikka masala.

Our recommendation: Always try something from the specials board outside the entrance. Or maybe a couple of things from it.

We’ve literally tried so many dishes and they’ve all been excellent, so it would be like creating a full listing of the menu here. Instead, let your cravings and the descriptions be your guide. Take friends. Order several things to share.

Even a meat-and-potatoes lesbian friend of ours ate her first Indian food ever here, and we hink she’s been back more times than we have in fewer months.

Do yourself a favor and check out Elephant Indian Grill as soon as you can. A second location will soon be open in Oak Cliff on Beckley Avenue, and a third takeout-only spot on Lovers Lane in the Park Cities.

Then you’ll have zero excuses for not taking an Elephant ride.
