Natural. Let us observe the passing of a great Hollywood icon. Brother Robert Redford has passed on to glory at the age of 89. The man was a giant in the world of film, and he never was stained by scandal, save an unfortunate divorce. In his memory, I offer these words. In this time where many fear All the President’s Men, Brother Bob reminded us that we are all Ordinary People who long for The Way We Were when men were strong and Butch and the natives offered a Sundance of renewal and healing. Even when we felt The Sting of trials and tribulations, RR gave us a reason to go Barefoot in the Park. He was The Natural who avoided any Indecent Proposal about An Unfinished Life. Many came Out of Africa to escape The Day of the Condor so that they could witness The Twilight Zone of his later years. And let us all be grateful that Brother Redford never bragged of being Inside Daisy Clover. That would just have been A Bridge Too Far. Amen.
Networks. Alas, Sunday night was the annual telecast of television self-indulgence, the Emmy Awards. I’m so glad they asked such a fine, family-friendly man to be the host this year. Not a single foul thing from his mouth all evening, resulting in a program devoid of anything titillating. So many awards being given to shows of which I had never heard, airing on networks unknown to me! I guess I’m too caught up in the Bible to attend to secular entertainment. Of course, like all these awards shows, people had to show off their alleged fashion choices, many of which made me gag. I won’t name names, but there were a few tarted-up women whose revealing outfits brought to mind the Golden Globes instead of the Emmys! And the number of people recognizing their same-sex spouses was appalling. Still, it was relatively tame, praise the Lord. Now pardon me while I go take up an offering for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. They ended up going home empty-handed. Much like the losers in the room.
Nationalism. What a glorious time to be a Christian! As a woman of faith, I offer my spiritual wisdom through this column almost every week. I, of course, rarely hold back on my opinions regardless of the topic. Still, our world is experiencing such a moving of emotions these days. Alas, I am appalled at the liberal voices in our midst calling for radical change. After all, every pastor and pundit I know has declared that today’s problems are all CAUSED by those on the “left.” As a result, our nation’s illustrious President is out for blood regarding these progressive voices. Let the liberals be silenced! Let it be a crime if they push back on this administration! Let all who speak against the spirit of nationalism be shamed or fired! Glory! The government is causing the Spirit to move, and we are witnessing a mighty gift of the tongues. And it sounds like German.
