These Boots Were Made For Marchin’

Ah, gay Marines.

We love them as much as gay men in the Air Force and Navy. (Our hookup bingo card only lacks a gay man in the Army).

Our dad always wanted us to join the armed forces, but we were too terrified because of what might happen if our homosexuality was figured out. (And trust us, it would be impossible to hide, especially in the group showers.)

The new Netflix series, Boots, explores what it was like to be queer in the armed forces a few years before Don’t Ask Don’t Tell went into effect in 1994.

Based on the memoir, “The Pink Marine” by Greg Cope White, Boots takes the dramedy approach to telling the story of boot camp life and the anxiety of hiding one’s true self.

Being gay in the military back then was illegal and as we experience new threats against our equality and freedoms as a community under this terrible administration, it’s important to have a glimpse into another person’s experience.

Fictional or otherwise.
