What’s that smell?
It’s liquid sex appeal and you’re engulfed in its subtle allure the moment you open the door of the new Olfactory NYC location in Dallas’s West Village shopping center.
We used to have a rather unhealthy fragrance obsession. Just ask Coco at Neiman Marcus NorthPark whose commission certainly plummeted when for whatever unexplained reason we suddenly stopped buying cologne.
Yet we were intrigued when Olfactory NYC invited us in to try out the customized fragrance process first-hand.
First, schedule an appointment for a consultation. Upon entering the studio, you’ll be directed to a wall with a rainbow-colored wall of nine ready-to-wear unisex fragrances crafted by some of the world’s top perfumers.
You could stop right there and leave with a fragrance you love as-is, but the fun part comes when you bring your favorites to the counter where a Scent-ologist works a little magic.
Through a conversation, they’ll determine what scents you like, don’t like, what you might want the fragrance to evoke and through some scientific decisions (and some random, let’s-see-if-this-works moments), different aromatic notes will be added to the ready-to-wear fragrances to create something uniquely you.
Once it’s narrowed down to four, they’ll spray four points on your body to see how each scent reacts with your specific body chemistry. We walked around West Village looking crazy as we held our elbows and hands up to our noses to smell how the fragrances changed.
After some careful consideration, we settled on our custom fragrance, chose a bottle color and even named our signature scent that they added to the label.
The custom fragrances only cost $85, which is far less than what we ever spent per bottle in our Neiman Marcus shopping spree days. From there, you can get lotion, body wash, room diffusers and solid scent palettes all with your signature fragrance. (Ready-to-wear fragrances are only $55.)
They’ll keep your custom formulation on file, too, making it simple to add these items or order more at any time.
This experience makes a great gift, too, and you can even send an at-home experience for people who don’t live in a city with an Olfactory NYC.
