Thar She Blows!

The day after the deliriously funny Catherine O’Hara died, we began a weeks-long binge of her work.

Much of that, of course, included Christopher Guest movies, from Best in Show to Waiting for Guffman. Both of those movies prominently feature LGBTQ characters, so when we read that CinéWilde at the Texas Theatre was screening A Mighty Wind, we were intrigued.

The film doesn’t have any openly queer characters (at least none revealed until an end-of-movie sight gag), but it does feature lesbian Jane Lynch and plenty of actors who’ve played gay in other Guest movies.

But leave it to CinéWilde to create a program that pokes deeper into the mockumentary film’s queer subtext.

The pre-show this month features a Q&A session with Prunella, a trans/disabled artist who you may have seen performing with the legendary May May Graves.

Prunella is a self-described weirdo, visual artist and musician who fronts the band Scarletien, so it’ll be an insightful perspective.

This month’s CinéWilde presentation takes place Sunday, May 17 at 3:00 p.m., with the movie starting at 3:20 and a speed-dating-style mingle session at 5:00.

Who knows, you could up leaving with A Mighty Friend, too.
