Travel Tuesday: Super Close & Super Queer

When Mr. Clock strikes midnight on June 1, Pride Month offiically begins. And with it, thousands of opportunities to gather with the LGBTQ+ community.

Dallas Pride will be here soon, but with it falling on the first weekend of June, you’ll have so many more opportunities throughout the month to celebrate queerness in other cities.

Fortunately, you don’t necessarily have to hop on a plane to gay up a different destination.

On Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14, the Big Ole Queer Market takes over the Irving Convention Center for two days of shopping and supporting LGBTQ+ businesses.

More than 100 artists and small businesses will be on-site offering everything from apparel and pet goods to fine art and cottage foods.

If you have a queer-owned business or something you’d like to sell, vendor applications are open through June 10 or until spaces sell out.

Best of all, whether you’re a vendor or attendee, you’ll be right across the street from one of the coolest hotels in North Texas: Texican Court.

We just stayed at the charming boutique hotel two weeks ago by pure coincidence and it’s such a fun place to spend a weekend.

The property evokes old-school road trip motels with a center courtyard, outside entrances to rooms and ice machines in the breezeways—except this is far from a motel. Luxury linens, incredible bathrooms, outdoor fire features, a circular swimming pool, and a delightful restaurant make for a relaxing getaway that feels way more Austin than Irving.

Plus, being able to simply pop back and forth between Texican Court and the convention center means you can park once and be settled for a couple of days.

Spend an afternoon in the pool then segue into late nights by the fire place or the rocking chairs in front of your room with a glass of wine.

On-site restaurant Two Mules Cantina satisfies every Mexican-inspired craving, from entrees to margaritas. And in the morning, the 3-for-$10 breakfast tacos are an insanely great bargain because they’re huge!

So, get your tickets now to the Big Ole’ Queer Market and book a room for a night or two at Texican Court.

It’s an easy, no-fuss weekend that gets you a change of scenery and the chance to support queer entrepreneurs at the same time.
