At an age when we no longer believe in Santa Claus and a surprise party might send us into cardiac arrest, it’s wonderful to still explore the unknown.
This happened this week when we were pitched the Video On Demand release of Camp.
It was billed as a “Queer Coming-of-Age Witch Horror Destined for Cult Status” in the subject line and we requested a screener without digging any deeper.
We’re so glad we didn’t read too much. Because what we expected to be actually campy turned out to be a surreal, moody, fever-dreamy, acid-trippy jaunt through the forest that felt at times like David Lynch was helping Canadian director Avalon Fast (they/them) from the great beyond.
Without spilling too much, what we will tell you is that the trippy film takes place at a religious summer camp for trouble youth.
Many of the counselors were once campers themselves, but instead of being nurturing or imparting any kind of wisdom from their own checkered pasts, they spend most of their days and nights getting black-out drunk, doing drugs and maybe exploring a little witchcraft and lesbianism in between sips and puffs.
