We Heart This Device So Much

The only thing less sexy than a man finding our AARP Magazine in the mailbox might be him seeing us get excited about a medical device.

Although staying alive is certainly sexier than not monitoring our heart health and heading for the crematorium instead of happy hour.

Indeed, we never thought we’d see the day that we’d be proudly featuring a personal EKG device when He Said Dallas started in 2007, but two decades later, that’s the demographic we find ourselves in.

Getting-older pity party aside, the KardiaMobile one-lead personal EKG device should be required in every medicine cabinet, regardless of whether you’re 27 or 72. Even twinks can have heart issues, after all.

So, when the good folks at KardiaMobile offered to send us a device to test out, we figured there was nothing to lose.

The tiny device arrives with a regular watch-size battery already installed, so there’s no need to waste time charging the device before putting it to work.

Download the app, follow a couple of quick setup options and within 30 seconds of placing your fingers Oujia Board-style on the pads, you’ll have your results.

Wow, are we ever happy that we have the device. Our results indicate tachycardia, which means we have a high resting heart rate.

Because we fall on the lower side of the above-100 beats-per-minute risk level, we’re going to continue monitoring before rushing to the doctor. But the lesson here is that we wouldn’t have known to monitor—and now attempt to lower that number by reducing alcohol intake and lowering our stress levels—without KardiaMobile.

When we go to the doctor next, we can download the medical-grade EKG results and email them to our doctor so he can see how the numbers have changed over time.

Hopefully changed for the better.
