Sometimes, it’s the little things that make us happy.
Sometimes, it’s the BIG things.
And other times, it’s the boozy things.
Well, last week we were invited to a sneak peek of the new Harwood District steakhouse,Docent,
We expected to be blown away by the steaks (which for the record, we were), but we never expected our pre-appetizer cocktail to be what excited us the most.
After perusing the Speciality Cocktails section of the menuand determining that each of them sounded a little too sweet for our personal preferences, we flipped the page. Everything and everyone in the restaurant stopped as a group of gospel singers walked in singing The Hallelujah Chorus.
Maybe that part was all in our head, but it might as well have been true.
Right there at the top of the Classic Cocktail section were two simple words: Martini Service.
Our steakhouse ritual often involves beginning the meal with a martini, so there wasn’t anything remarkable about that. Or the $20 price tag.
But the customization options were plentiful.
Choose from vodka or gin. Straight up, classic, dirty or pickle.
Prefer stirred or shaken? You’re in luck.
Then garnish it with a lemon twist, classic olives, spicy olives, bleu cheese olives, cocktail onions or pickles.
When our martinis hit they table, they were ice-cold and arrived with a sidecar on ice to keep the extra martini chilled. That’s not uncommon at higher end restaurants, but one service detail was next-level. At any point your server sees that your martini glass has lost its frostiness, they’ll swoop in with a new, straight-from-the-freezer martini glass.
What a perfecct way to kick off a very memorable meal, which included a perfect jumbo lump crab cake, crispy rice and spicy tuna, a little gem Caesar salad, a one-pound, aged Prime New York Strip (medium-rare) and some of the best au gratin potatoes we’ve tasted in years.
Next time we’re craving a Prime steak, we’ll be back.
But before that, we’ll most definitely be returning to sit at the bar for a martini or two and a big basket of beef tallow popcorn.
Because sometimes, it’s the littlest dinners that make us happy.
