Travel Tuesday: A Petit Gem In Puerto Vallarta

A young man wearing sunglasses smiles while relaxing at the edge of a swimming pool, with a scenic backdrop of a cloudy sky and a tropical environment.

The rainy season in Puerto Vallarta will be over any day now.

And you know what that means! Time to book your holiday, spring or Vallarta Pride vacations.

We try to visit PV at least twice a year, which we did in 2026. Sometimes we get offered a place to stay to cover a new property, and other times we do our own research, pay out of pocket and roll the dice that the website isn’t lying to us.

During our last visit over the 4th of July, we stayed at a new-to-us, adults-only hotel in the heart of the Zona Romantica: Amaca Petit Hotel.

View of a rooftop pool area featuring lounge chairs, umbrellas, and a dining area surrounded by tropical vegetation and buildings, with the ocean visible in the background.

The location, just up the hill from Tryst and Los Muertos Beach, was just where we were hoped to be. In the summer heat, the hike up all those stairs from the beach on one of the steepest hills in PV was a challenge at times, but the free funicular also made things easy when our glutes and calves couldn’t take any more.

During the cooler weather of fall and winter, we don’t think the hill will be an issue at all.

On the hotel’s website, everything looked great and we were pleased that reality matched digital for once. Our room looked exactly as it appeared online and the price of less than $75 per night for a premium, partial ocean view room couldn’t be beat.

A modern and minimalist bedroom with a king-sized bed featuring a wooden headboard, bedside lamps, and a colorful accent pillow. Adjacent is a sleek bathroom area with a concrete bathtub, circular mirror, and a wooden vanity.

We just checked and even at the priciest time of the year, New Year’s Eve, rooms start at only $226. Still a steal!

Because of the building’s location, you’ll get ocean views that only get better the higher up you go. You’re not right on the Bay of Banderas, but if you’re like us, we’re totally happy having a partial view and saving a couple grand over something beachfront.

Our room was spotless, charmingly decorated and quite large. We had a nice-sized balcony, a hammock (Amaca means hammock, by the way), and a soaking tub right in the bedroom, in addition to a full-size shower in the bathroom.

A balcony featuring a round black table and a chair, with a beige parasol, overlooking a cityscape under a cloudy sky.

If you have any mobility issues, that could be the only hiccup, as the hotel doesn’t have an elevator.

So, much like our multiple-times-per-day trek up and down the hill, taking the stairs to our third-floor room or all the way up to the rooftop dipping pool really gave us some enviable legs for a few weeks.

We’re already planning a repeat stay next May for Pride because the money we’ll save over some of the other popular spots in town will buy us a whole lot of margaritas.

And shady massages.
