SPCA Pet of the Week: A Little Patience, A Lot Of Amos

At 76 pounds, Amos is a substantial presence. He just doesn’t necessarily want to make an entrance.

This four-year-old German Shepherd mix can be shy around new people and hesitant in unfamiliar places. Give him a little time to feel safe, though, and the handsome fellow starts leaning in for gentle pets. Soon, you’re getting a tail wag just for showing up. That’s a pretty good return on a little patience.

Amos has a playful side, too, particularly when toys or a chance to learn something new are involved. He’s smart and enjoys figuring out new tricks, especially when his efforts earn a treat or some encouragement. Being told he’s a good boy certainly doesn’t hurt. Some of us have built entire personalities around less.

His quieter side is just as appealing. Amos is happy keeping someone company while they read or settle in after a long day. He doesn’t need to command the room to enjoy being part of it. For someone whose favorite evening plans involve staying home, he makes a compelling case for adding a dog to the guest list.

The right family will give Amos room to get comfortable and let his affectionate nature emerge at its own pace. There will be time for walks and playing with toys, with quiet evenings together in between.

If you’re looking for a companion who enjoys learning something new but also appreciates an uneventful night, Amos is worth meeting. Allow him a gentle introduction. There’s a lot of dog here, and getting to know him is part of the pleasure.

Amos is neutered, microchipped and up to date on his vaccinations. Meet him at the SPCA of Texas Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center, 2400 Lone Star Drive in Dallas, open daily from noon to 6 p.m.
