Travel Tuesday: New Nonstop Flights From McKinney In The Dallas ‘Burbs

Avelo Airlines airplane in flight against a clear blue sky.

Attention people of the northern hinterlands!

You no longer have to schlep all the way to DFW International Airport or Love Field to get the hell out of Texas.

Beginning November 11, the first flights on Avelo Airlines begin departing McKinney National Airport (TKI) with nonstop service to Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa and Las Vegas.

Then, on December 16, Atlanta joins the lineup, followed by Denver, Nashville and our beloved weekend getaway destination, New Orleans.

We don’t know much about Avelo, other than it appears poised to take over the airspace once occupied by Spirit Airlines as a super-low-cost carrier.

That means potentially big bargains.

For instance, the first flight to New Orleans will only cost you $71 roundtrip for the Basic fare (you can only take a personal item on board). Prices go up to $193 for the Preferred fare, which includes a personal item, checked bag and standard seat. Or opt for the Premium fare, which includes a personal item, carry-on, checked bag and a stretch seat for $277.

So, clearly, if you can go someplace where you can fit everything you need into a small backpack, you’ll save a ton of money.

If you join Avelo Plus ($59 for your first year), the savings increase further.

Currently, there aren’t daily flights to destinations, so you’re beholden to their schedule. In our New Orleans example, you’d fly out on Thursday, December 17 and return on Sunday, December 20.

But if you live near the McKinney airport, these options could be a real travel game-changer.

Especially if you only wear Speedos in the winter.
