Travel Tuesday: Ha-Ha-Hooray For Hollywood!

After the sudden cold snap the past couple of days, we’ve been doing a lot of California dreamin’.

And even more California streamin’.

We have had an overwhelming sense of Covid-era déjà vu over the weekend because we were binge-watching the last few Oscar nominated movies on our list with some hilarious comedy specials peppered in between. (Marcello Hernández: American Boy was a highlight and not simply because we have a mad crush on the SNL breakout star.)

Now imagine a vacation built entirely around laughter—and Netflix.

Also Marcello Hernandez, as luck would have it.

This May 4-10, the Los Angeles area will be filled with joyous sounds as the Netflix Is A Joke Fest descends upon southern California.

We love building vacations around events because it often takes us to different parts of the country we might not normally venture to. We’ve booked trips to San Francisco for the Hump! Film Festival (coming to Austin soon, BTW), Gay Wine Weekend in Sonoma County and San Antonio’s annual cultural celebration, Fiesta.

Netflix Is A Joke Fest features more than 350 live events, so you can easily customize an itinerary based on your favorite comedians.

Best of all, the festival has tons of queer representation.

Bob The Drag Queen

ALOK, Joel Kim Booster, Jerrod Carmichael, Margaret Cho, Fortune Feimster, Ilana Glazer, Jeff Hiller, Tig Notaro, Atsuko Okatsuka, Wanda Sykes, Bob The Drag Queen, Trixie & Katya and Jonathan Van Ness all land somewhere on the LGBTQ spectrum (and the festival’s schedule).

Plus, countless allies will be ready to make you guffaw, giggle and gay-gasp gleefully.

There’s a special 40th anniversary tribute to Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, too.

So, book a flight (Southwest’s weekly fare sale goes live today) then start getting tickets to all the shows you can squeeze into a few days in the warm California sun.

Laughter may be the best medicine, but if you ask us, traveling ties for the top spot of non-pharmaceutical remedies.
